On the afternoon of March 9, 2023,
teachers and students from the International DepartmentofShenzhenHualangSchoolheld a meaningful event at the beach of Rose Coast to protect the beautiful coastal ecological environment and safeguard our blue skies and clear waters.
Wecleaned up the coastline ofDapengNew District along the Rose Coast beach, usingourfootsteps and actions to convey the concept of ecological civilization to protect the marine environment to all of humanity.
Additionally, as all of our students participate in the Duke of Edinburgh’s International awards, we are trying to use this project as our voluntary service, hoping that it bring fun and fulfillment to our life.
Located inDapengNew District, the Rose Coast Scenic Area boasts a tranquil blue bay and the faint silhouette of Hong Kong"s mountains. Stretching over a kilometer long, the soft sandy beach and clear seawater attract visitors with their natural beauty.
Thevariously shapednatural reefs and primitive trees deeply impress everystudent and teacher’seyes. Accompanied by laughter and joy, studentsand teachersallimmersedthemselves in the embrace of the warm sun and gentle sea breeze.
After arriving on the beach, the four teams prepared to start the Biology experiments. Applying the knowledge we’ve learned in the Biology classroom, outside in the nature, we were all curious to try them out in real life.
The first experiment is the Quadrant experiment where students measured the amount of plants and other living organisms such as small insects in different given areas to make a number pyramid and a biomass pyramid. That showed us that our ecosystem is interdependent on each other.
The second experiment is the pH Experiment. We measured the pH value in the soil and in the water to find out the reason why there are different amount of living organisms in different kind of environments. Thirdly, the last experiment we did is on the salinity on the beach. With a salt-density measurer, we compared the salinity in different areas on the beach and made conclusion about the influence of salinity on numbers of organisms. Combining indoor learning and outdoor experiences, all of our students expanded their knowledge on a new and interesting way.

In recent years, marine debris pollution has become a widely discussed international issue that has had significant impacts on the economy, politics, and the environment. As the largest recipient of waste on Earth, the ocean absorbs millions of tons of garbage every year, causing irreversible effects on marine life, humans, and theplanet as a whole.
The accumulation of garbage in the ocean obstructs shipping routes, damages vessels, and poses serious harm to marine organisms.Marine animals may be injured or killed by ingesting plastic debris or becoming entangled in discarded fishing nets. Furthermore, persistent andbioaccumulativepollutants in marine debris can also affect humans through the food chain.
Therefore, the fight against marine debris and the urgent need for beach clean-up efforts require the participation of every citizen.
We are not alone. In order tobetter engage in marine environmental protection activities, some of our studentshave become part of theBlue-Ribbon OceanConservation Association(BROCA)Volunteers, and we are also planning to join as a team and become a volunteer school of the association.
TheBROCAwas founded in June 2007 and is the country"s first non-governmental public welfare organization focused on marine environmental protection. The blue ribbon represents gratitude, encouragement, care, and love.
Combining indoor learning and outdoor experiences, all our students expanded their knowledge on a new and interesting way.
After that, our project on cleaning the beach started. As there’s a lot of trash on the beach, our students decided to give all their efforts to clean up the beach. In their groups, they all brought clamps to do the clean-up hoping to strive for a better world.

By going outside the classroom, every student and teacher could contribute to the environment, and it indirectly also raised their awareness to use less plastic and to recycle as much as possible.
After all the efforts, students and teachers used the rest of the time to relax and to do some sports such as playing beach volleyball, soccer, Rugby and frisbee.
It was an educating and entertaining expedition where everyone of them could apply classroom learning in the real world and help to clean the ocean, hoping for a better green.
