Contests have been a popular way to showcase skills and knowledge for centuries. From the earliest Olympic Games in ancient Greece to modern-day spelling bees and talent shows, people have always enjoyed the thrill of competition. In recent years, speech contests have become increasingly popular among language learners. This is because public speaking is a crucial skill for non-native speakers of English, both in academic and professional settings.

At SCCSC, we understand the importance of public speaking for language learners. That"s why we organized a speech contest that took place from March 13th-24th in the multi-function hall. The contest was open to grade 10 students who wanted to showcase their public speaking skills. The contest was a great success, with students delivering impressive speeches on a variety of topics.
Why are speech contests so good for language learners? First of all, they can help improve their English language skills because they provide a unique opportunity to practice speaking in a supportive and structured environment. By participating in a speech contest, language learners can improve their pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and fluency. They also learn how to organize their thoughts and express themselves clearly and effectively. Audience members can also practice their listening skills.
In addition, speech contests help language learners build confidence and overcome the fear of public speaking. Many people, including native English speakers, struggle with public speaking, but for language learners, the challenge can be even greater. By participating in a speech contest, students can face their fears and gain the confidence they need to speak confidently in other situations, such as job interviews, speaking tests, or academic presentations.
Another benefit of speech contests is that they encourage students to share their different ideas and perspectives. Because students come from diverse backgrounds, there is an exchange of understanding, experiences and knowledge between learners, which they can share through their speeches. This not only helps them improve their English abilities but also enhances their understanding of different ways of thinking.
After two weeks of competition, the winners of SCCSC"s Grade 10 ENG Speech Competition have been announced! Congratulations to the following students for their outstanding speeches:

These students demonstrated exceptional skills in public speaking, showcasing their fluency, pronunciation, and organization of ideas. We cannot emphasize enough how hard each of the students tried and how much effort they put into their speeches. They all rehearsed their speeches and looked for and received feedback from their teachers and peers. Their achievements have not gone unnoticed, and we are incredibly proud of their dedication and commitment to improving their English abilities. We are sure that their skills will serve them well in their academic and professional lives.
The success of this year"s speech contest has been a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students. We are proud of all the participants, and we are grateful to our teachers and staff who organized the contest and worked to make it a success. Looking forward, we hope to see even more participation in next year"s contest and look forward to continuing this tradition and seeing more great speeches from our students in the years to come.
