At ISA Wuhan International School we welcome all students into our community. Our English Department has very experienced teachers who are happy to teach students of all levels of English ability.

Students learn best when they feel confident and able to learn at the appropriate pace. That is why at the beginning of each academic year, each student is tested on their reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities. The students are then placed into the appropriate pathway for them to succeed. Students either study Language and Literature or Language Acquisition.

The former focuses on a more in-depth study of English texts including classic authors such as Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare. Students will also read texts written in English by authors from more diverse cultures and countries. In language Acquisition classes, students focus on improving their grammar skills through reading and writing activities, as well as practicing their speaking and listening skills.

Students are always encouraged to achieve their potential and are monitored throughout the year. They complete a variety of assessments and tasks that the teachers record and use to track progress. In Language Acquisition, students are taught based on which MYP phase they can achieve. Phase 1 is for beginners and Phase 6 is the final phase.

If students achieve phase 5 or 6, they can begin to be considered for moving to English Language and Literature. Before moving pathway, the student will be given more advanced reading and writing tasks and the Language and literature teacher will conduct speaking practice sessions with the student to check that they will be able to keep up with the pace of the class discussions.

To begin with, students who have moved from the Language Acquisition pathway into Language and Literature might feel nervous or lacking in confidence because the language used for discussion will be advanced or unfamiliar. However, they need not worry as the teachers and students are always happy to help.

The best way for students to progress is by enjoying and fully engaging in their learning. That requires the teachers to combine many different methods when planning lessons. The teachers are trained to evaluate student progress not only by formal assessments but also by observing students interacting in class discussions and group activities.

Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of ways such as giving presentations, employing their research skills, working together creatively, and discussing the author"s intentions. This way students learn from each other and can evaluate their own strengths and weaknesses.

This semester, Grade 6 Language and Literature have been focused on fantasy literature and creating their own choose-your-own-adventure fantasy stories. They worked together to create the beginning of the story as a group, and then they have taken the exposition in different directions, as this has them Organising, Producing Text, and Using Language.

They will be Analysing the stories too to help each other improve as students often learn best from each other. In addition, all students have been going to the library once a week where they complete library-based activities and spend some time reading physical books.

The Grade 7 Language and Literature students have read The Tempest by William Shakespeare. They have completed descriptive writing of the island on which the characters get shipwrecked, character analysis, and an essay about the theme of magic. Grade 8 Language and Literature students have read various poems in a poetry unit titled ‘Poisonous Poetry’.

The students learned about different styles of poems such as sonnets and monologues and different devices used by poets to create different effects. They then created their own poems in similar styles and made them into an anthology booklet. Grade 10 students have been studying Protest poetry and the work of British graffiti artist, Banksy. They worked collaboratively to produce a poem on a topic that interested them and performed it after watching students around the world take part in a Slam Poetry competition.

In the English Acquisition class, we have been reading a fiction novel called “The Miami Police File: the O’Nell Case.” This is a children’s book that is suitable for second-language learners. This book not only ignites students’ interest in reading, but it also includes the necessary exercises to help students practise their reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills.

Students have learned how to write a chapter summary. After completing the book this week, they wrote a book review. The students are now preparing a drama activity based on their favorite characters and chapters in the novel.

All students in the Secondary School have been Using Language to work on producing a literature anthology compiled and edited by Mr. Riggs.
